Questions workers ask

Does prevailing wage cover survey work on public projects?▾
Yes. California Labor Code Section 1720 counts preconstruction land surveying as public works construction, even when no construction follows. DIR sets prevailing wage rates for covered projects over $1,000.
Can I be paid apprentice rates on a public survey job?▾
Yes, if you are registered in a DAS-approved apprenticeship program. The Labor Commissioner's Public Works Manual says other workers receive the journeyman rate for their classification. Ask for proof of your apprenticeship registration.
When does overtime apply to field crews?▾
DIR's Labor Commissioner says California generally requires overtime for nonexempt employees after eight daily or 40 weekly hours. Alternative schedules and qualifying collective agreements have exceptions. Ask which rules cover the position and how required field preparation is recorded.
