What Plumbers Earn in California

California employee wages span $22.76–$63.03/hr, with published annual earnings of $47,350–$131,100 a year. These figures cover plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters together. For plumbing offers, match the range to installation, service or repair duties and the hours offered. Premium pay and benefits sit outside these wages. A customer's invoice also covers business expenses beyond an employee's earnings. Compare the written offer with the plumbing tasks assigned daily.

Questions workers ask

Does Local 342 pay apprentices for classroom time?▾
No. Local 342 states that classroom attendance is unpaid. Under Title 8 Section 212, DAS-approved standards must still set a progressively increasing wage for work hours. Ask the office for its current schedule and required contributions.
How does overtime affect a plumbing offer?▾
IWC Wage Order 16, enforced by DIR's Labor Commissioner, generally requires overtime for nonexempt work beyond eight daily or 40 weekly hours. Alternative schedules and qualifying collective agreements have exceptions. Ask how the employer records required preparation, cleanup and workday travel between plumbing assignments.
What should I compare besides the hourly range?▾
Request the expected weekly hours, service territory, emergency rotation and benefit contributions. For public works, ask which prevailing-wage determination covers your plumbing duties. Keep employee wages separate from customer charges, which require a contractor's CSLB C-36 license.
