Questions workers ask

Does a per-brick arrangement remove overtime rights?▾
No. Virginia's overtime law, which DOLI enforces, applies the federal standard, so covered nonexempt masons paid per brick still earn overtime after 40 hours in a workweek. Piecework still requires hours records and a proper regular-rate calculation. Include required layout, mortar mixing and cleanup when recording the day.
Do I pay for silica medical exams if I cut block?▾
No. VOSH's silica rule requires employers to offer medical exams at no cost, at a reasonable time and place, to each worker required to wear a respirator for 30 or more days a year.
Where can I raise concerns about pay & compensation in Virginia?▾
DOLI accepts wage claims and handles overtime enforcement for overtime earned from July 1, 2026. Keep time records, pay statements and written instructions about disputed work. The Payment of Wage office of DOLI explains the claim route and supporting documents.
