Questions workers ask

Is my pre-shift forklift inspection paid time?▾
Yes. VOSH requires each truck to be examined before use at least daily, and an inspection your employer requires is working time for covered employees. Log it with your shift, and raise unpaid inspection time with DOLI.
Does an operating engineer apprenticeship raise pay as I progress?▾
Yes. Virginia Works rules require registered apprenticeship standards to set a progressively increasing wage schedule. Ask the sponsor how forklift and other equipment hours count toward each step.
Will a long forklift shift qualify for overtime?▾
Yes, if your hours top 40 in a workweek and you are a covered nonexempt employee. Virginia's overtime law applies the federal standard. A long day by itself does not establish that weekly total. Keep records of all assigned work, including loading duties away from the seat.
