How to Hire a Welder in the United States

For employers hiring construction, fabrication or repair welders. Match performance evidence to the required process, position and material. Agree procedures, inspection points and acceptance criteria before comparing candidates. A generic card does not qualify every weld. Employee wages span industries; subcontract prices include business and project costs.

Understanding different hiring levels

The levels are separated by what the state allows a person to do unsupervised, not by how good they are. Hiring the wrong level is the most common and most expensive mistake on a trade requisition.

ACheapest to hireApprentice / helper

Productive under supervision and cheap, but they cannot be left on a task the state licenses, and they need someone qualified with them.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Prepping metal surfaces by grinding, beveling, cleaning joints, and securing structural fit-ups under direct supervision.
  • ✓Executing basic flat and horizontal position welds using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick) or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG).
  • ✓Setting up welding machines, managing shielding gas tanks, replacing consumables, and maintaining clean, safe shop work zones.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot perform certified multi-pass vertical or overhead structural welds without supervision or formal qualification testing.
  • ✕Cannot interpret complex structural steel blueprints, pipe isometric drawings, or Advanced Welding Symbol specifications independently.
What they need to hold
OSHA 10Apprentice registration where the state requires it
Worth doing
Hire them to handle surface prep, basic tacking, component staging, and flat production welds to keep certified welders focused on critical joints.
Where recruiters stall
Candidates often get disqualified early for poor joint prep habits, inconsistent torch angle and speed control, or failing initial bend tests.
Only hire when
You source a candidate with basic shop math skills, hands-on experience running clean beads, and active progress toward AWS entry-level certifications.
JWhat most requisitions needJourneyman / qualified

Works unsupervised and can carry a helper. This is the level almost every requisition is actually describing.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Performing multi-position structural steel and pressure pipe welds (3G/4G, 5G/6G) using Stick, MIG, Flux-Cored (FCAW), or TIG (GTAW) processes.
  • ✓Reading welding symbols and structural schematics, setting joint gaps, aligning heavy steel members, and managing heat input to prevent warping.
  • ✓Passing mandatory non-destructive testing (NDT), such as visual, dye penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic inspection on critical load joints.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot stamp engineering drawings, approve weld procedure specifications (WPS), or authorize material substitution on code jobs.
  • ✕Cannot manage site-wide QA/QC programs, conduct certified inspector sign-offs, or oversee full fabrication shop production schedules solo.
What they need to hold
Journeyman card where the state issues oneOSHA 30Current trade-specific safety training
Worth doing
Recruit them when you need field-tested welders who can read prints, pass NDT/X-ray tests, and make code-compliant structural or pipe welds independently.
Where recruiters stall
Candidates get stuck in your pipeline when they are limited to shop MIG welding and fail to master open-root TIG pipe welding or all-position field Stick work.
Only hire when
You find a candidate with 3–5+ years of verified field/shop experience, active AWS/ASME certifications, and a track record of passing X-ray quality welds.
MFor scope and sign-offMaster / lead

Runs crews across sites, owns compliance outcomes, and where the trade allows, pulls permits and qualifies the work.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Developing and qualifying Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) and Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS) for code-regulated projects.
  • ✓Inspecting finished welds as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), managing QA/QC compliance, and testing/certifying junior welders.
  • ✓Overseeing shop and site welding operations, managing material takeoffs, optimizing cycle times, and ensuring strict adherence to AWS/ASME codes.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot override structural engineering design loads, base-metal thickness specifications, or stamped metallurgical specs.
What they need to hold
Master or supervisor card where the state issues oneContinuing education current
Worth doing
Bring them on to lead your welding operations, maintain certified QA/QC standards, develop procedure specs, and eliminate weld rework costs.
Where recruiters stall
Candidates stall in your recruitment funnel when they have decades of hood time but lack inspector credentials (CWI), blueprint authority, or crew management skills.
Only hire when
You land a master welder holding AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credentials with proven expertise in code compliance, procedure development, and shop management.

What a welder costs in the United States

Budget $25.84 an hour for a qualified welder in the United States, from $18.87 at entry level to $37.28 at the top. Add a quarter to a third on top for payroll taxes, insurance and equipment, and price overtime at time and a half.

Where to find them in USA

Explore graduates through Hobart's structural program, Lincoln's process training and participating Job Corps centers. Verify achieved welding qualifications and tested scope for your work; course completion or education charges do not guarantee placement.

Structural training

Hobart Institute of Welding Technology — Structural Welding Program

Ask about graduates and qualification-test scope. The Troy programme teaches multiple plate processes. Published projected costs include tuition, equipment and materials; living expenses are separate.
Typical length24 weeks
What it costs$16,828
Process training

Lincoln Electric Welding Technology and Training Center — Comprehensive Program

Ask about Cleveland graduates and employer connections. Training covers common processes and testing. Verify achieved qualifications; gear is included, boots excluded.

Job Corps — Welding

Ask participating centres about graduates and employer partnerships. Verify skills and qualifications; individual pathways do not have one national duration.

Screen them properly

Certificates get a candidate past the first filter. These are the questions that separate the ones who can do the work from the ones who have the paperwork, and they change by level.

Interview questions that actually filter

01What did you do on your last site, task by task?
Why it matters: A specific answer tells you what they have actually held in their hands. A vague one usually means they watched.
02Who signed your hours, and can we call them?
Why it matters: Undocumented hours are the single most common problem at this level, and it is the employer who discovers it later.
03Which tools do you own?
Why it matters: It is a proxy for commitment to the trade, and it tells you what you will be supplying on day one.

Questions employers ask

Should we require several years of experience for an entry-level welding job?▾
Only if the work warrants it. BLS reports that some employers train inexperienced welders, and even technically trained entrants need on-the-job training. For a trainee vacancy, separate skills needed on arrival from those you can teach, and budget supervision before expecting independent production.
How can we reduce turnover among newly hired welders?▾
Start structured mentoring during onboarding. Give a new welder a suitable shop mentor, explain how progression works and provide support while classroom skills become production habits. AWS's retention guidance recommends early mentorship and visible paths into fabrication, inspection, automation or leadership.
Can we fill a robotic welding role with a manual welder?▾
Potentially, with additional training. Define whether the vacancy includes robot programming, cell setup, troubleshooting or quality control. Ask for evidence of those skills separately from manual welding experience. AWS describes automated production as requiring people who can program and operate the system.
