About this Guide

For people preparing to join metals in construction, fabrication or repair. Welders read instructions, prepare joints, control the process and check finished work. Employers need skills suited to the actual material, process and position. A strong-looking bead does not establish compliance. Build supervised experience and understand the procedure and acceptance requirements.

Welder skill levels in USA

Welding careers generally progress through three levels: Apprentice Welder, Journeyman Welder, and Master/Lead Welder.

AWhere you startApprentice Welder

An apprentice welder is a beginner developing welding skills through supervised training.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Prepping metal surfaces by grinding, beveling, cleaning joints, and securing structural fit-ups under direct supervision.
  • ✓Executing basic flat and horizontal position welds using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick) or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG).
  • ✓Setting up welding machines, managing shielding gas tanks, replacing consumables, and maintaining clean, safe shop work zones.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot perform certified multi-pass vertical or overhead structural welds without supervision or formal qualification testing.
  • ✕Cannot interpret complex structural steel blueprints, pipe isometric drawings, or Advanced Welding Symbol specifications independently.
What they need to hold
Entry-level training.Safety training.Required job credentials.
Worth doing
Build a specialized, high-demand trade career where your hands-on skill directly determines your earning potential across manufacturing and heavy construction.
Where recruiters stall
Getting comfortable with basic shop MIG production welding and failing to master vertical/overhead positions, TIG processes, or blueprint symbol reading.
Only hire when
You maintain clean, consistent bead profiles in flat/horizontal positions, understand heat settings for different metal thicknesses, and hold basic AWS entry credentials.
JThe main goalJourneyman Welder

A journeyman welder completes qualified welding work independently within their approved scope.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Performing multi-position structural steel and pressure pipe welds (3G/4G, 5G/6G) using Stick, MIG, Flux-Cored (FCAW), or TIG (GTAW) processes.
  • ✓Reading welding symbols and structural schematics, setting joint gaps, aligning heavy steel members, and managing heat input to prevent warping.
  • ✓Passing mandatory non-destructive testing (NDT), such as visual, dye penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic inspection on critical load joints.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot stamp engineering drawings, approve weld procedure specifications (WPS), or authorize material substitution on code jobs.
  • ✕Cannot manage site-wide QA/QC programs, conduct certified inspector sign-offs, or oversee full fabrication shop production schedules solo.
What they need to hold
Relevant welding qualifications.Current safety training.Required project credentials.
Worth doing
Command top hourly rates, travel for specialized industrial/pipe work, and become the go-to welder trusted with high-pressure, zero-defect welds.
Where recruiters stall
Staying limited to basic structural steel work instead of learning open-root pipe welding, exotic alloys (stainless, titanium), or non-destructive testing standards.
Only hire when
You can consistently pass 6G pipe or 3G/4G structural plate bend tests, read complex isometric prints, and achieve X-ray quality welds on live jobs.
MWhere it leadsMaster / Lead Welder

A master or lead welder guides welding work, quality, safety, and less-experienced team members.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Developing and qualifying Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) and Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS) for code-regulated projects.
  • ✓Inspecting finished welds as a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), managing QA/QC compliance, and testing/certifying junior welders.
  • ✓Overseeing shop and site welding operations, managing material takeoffs, optimizing cycle times, and ensuring strict adherence to AWS/ASME codes.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot override structural engineering design loads, base-metal thickness specifications, or stamped metallurgical specs.
  • ✕Cannot authorize structural modifications without approval from the project engineer of record.
What they need to hold
Advanced welding experience.Current safety training.Required leadership credentials.Employer-required qualifications.
Worth doing
Step into high-paying inspection and management roles, lead full fabrication facilities, and set the quality standards for major industrial projects.
Where recruiters stall
Relying purely on manual hood time while neglecting CWI study, metallurgy principles, quality management systems, and team leadership.
Only hire when
You earn your AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential, know how to write and qualify WPS documents, and can lead an entire fabrication team.

What you're legally required to have

Requirements depend on location, project, material and hazards. Welding performance qualification is separate from contractor business licensing and safety training. Check applicable codes and employer requirements before production work. Employers must provide required hazard controls and instruction; a course certificate does not authorize every welding process or job.

Where to train as a welder in USA

Compare supervised practice, processes and qualification opportunities rather than course length alone. Verify admission, schedules, accommodation and included materials. Completion does not guarantee employment or qualification for every weld.

What recruiters actually look for

Recruiters want to see that you can work safely, learn from others, and contribute reliably at your current welding level.

Qualities that get you hired

01You show up ready to work
Why it matters: Reliable attendance helps the crew stay on schedule and shows that you take the opportunity seriously.
02You can take correction well
Why it matters: Apprentices improve faster when they listen, ask questions, and apply feedback without taking it personally.
03You own basic tools
Why it matters: Having basic tools and looking after them shows preparation and respect for the work.
04You follow safety instructions
Why it matters: Safe habits help protect you and the people working nearby.

What holds people back

!

Arriving late without communicating.

!

Taking every correction personally.

!

Losing or neglecting basic tools.

!

Letting qualifications expire.

!

Struggling with drawings or measurements.

!

Questions people ask

Will my AWS Certified Welder credential follow me to another state?▾
Yes. AWS Certified Welder certification is portable across employers and states where the qualification is accepted, provided it stays active. Before relocating, ask the new employer whether your tested scope matches its work and whether it requires another performance test.
Can an experienced welder move into welding inspection?▾
Yes. For AWS Certified Welding Inspector eligibility, a high school graduate generally needs five years of qualifying welding-based experience; relevant education can reduce that requirement. Applicants must also satisfy the vision and examination requirements. Keep employment records that document eligible experience.
Is learning robotic welding useful for a manual welder?▾
It can open another career path. Automated welding still needs people to set up work, program equipment, troubleshoot and check quality. Seek hands-on experience with the systems employers use; manual welding ability alone does not demonstrate robot-programming competence.
