What Equipment Operators Earn in the United States

Current national employee wages for operating engineers and other construction equipment operators span $20.28–$48.60/hr, or $42,190–$101,090/year. This benchmark covers construction machine operation, not a combined crane, forklift and paving-operator wage series. Location, employer, equipment and project duties affect offers. Editorial experience bands do not promise a rate after a fixed number of years or replace an apprenticeship's negotiated pay progression.

Questions workers ask

Do night equipment shifts automatically pay a premium?▾
No. Federal rules do not generally require extra pay just for night work. An agreement, policy or applicable rule may provide a differential. Ask which hours qualify and whether the advertised rate already includes it.
Is required pre-shift equipment preparation paid work?▾
Required work generally counts as working time. Record instructions to inspect, fuel or prepare equipment before the scheduled operating period. Optional early arrival differs from assigned duties; ask when timekeeping starts rather than assuming only moving the machine counts.
Is an advertised total package all cash wages?▾
Not necessarily. A package may include employer-funded benefits rather than money added to each paycheck. On covered Davis-Bacon projects, ask for the basic rate, fringe obligation and qualifying benefit credits separately when comparing offers.
