How to Hire a Forklift Operator in the United States

For employers hiring warehouse, yard or construction forklift operators. Match experience to truck, attachments, surfaces and pedestrian activity. A card from another course or employer does not automatically establish competence at your workplace. The wage benchmark covers industrial truck and tractor operators. Plan qualified instruction, practical assessment, traffic control and employment records before comparing candidates or assigning a truck.

Understanding different hiring levels

The levels are separated by what the state allows a person to do unsupervised, not by how good they are. Hiring the wrong level is the most common and most expensive mistake on a trade requisition.

ACheapest to hireApprentice / helper

Productive under supervision and cheap, but they cannot be left on a task the state licenses, and they need someone qualified with them.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Performing basic pallet loading, unloading, and staging in open warehouse bays using standard sit-down forklifts.
  • ✓Executing mandatory pre-shift equipment safety inspections, checking battery levels or propane tanks, and reporting mechanical issues.
  • ✓Assisting ground staff with manual staging, wrapped-pallet labeling, and keeping aisle ways clear of debris.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot maneuver heavy or oversized loads in tight, high-rack aisles or operate specialized equipment like order pickers and reach trucks.
  • ✕Cannot perform basic mechanical troubleshooting or manage complex inventory logging and warehouse management system (WMS) scanning independently.
What they need to hold
OSHA 10Apprentice registration where the state requires it
Worth doing
Hire them to fill immediate high-volume loading dock needs and basic pallet moves without paying top-tier certified operator rates.
Where recruiters stall
Candidates often get disqualified early for attendance issues, poor spatial awareness, or failing pre-employment drug and safety screenings.
Only hire when
You find a candidate with a fresh OSHA forklift certification, a clean safety record, and strong spatial awareness who respects equipment limits.
JWhat most requisitions needJourneyman / qualified

Works unsupervised and can carry a helper. This is the level almost every requisition is actually describing.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Operating specialized machinery like stand-up reach trucks, order pickers, or clamp trucks in high-density, narrow-aisle racking.
  • ✓Managing active inventory placement using handheld WMS scanners and executing precision loading for tight line-haul trailers.
  • ✓Navigating high-traffic production floors safely around pedestrian workers and managing dynamic staging zones during peak shifts.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot design site-wide traffic safety plans, manage fleet maintenance schedules, or sign off on official OSHA operator recertifications.
  • ✕Cannot lead multi-shift warehouse floor logistics or handle hazardous material (Hazmat) transport compliance without specialized safety oversight.
What they need to hold
Journeyman card where the state issues oneOSHA 30Current trade-specific safety training
Worth doing
Recruit them when you need operators who can step right onto active, fast-paced production floors and safely manage high-bay stacking without supervision.
Where recruiters stall
Candidates get stuck here when they rely strictly on basic sit-down lifts and fail to cross-train on specialized equipment like combi-lifts, side-loaders, or turret trucks.
Only hire when
You source a candidate with 3+ years of multi-equipment experience, proven high-rack accuracy, and a track record of zero inventory damage.
MFor scope and sign-offMaster / lead

Runs crews across sites, owns compliance outcomes, and where the trade allows, pulls permits and qualifies the work.

What they'll actually be doing
  • ✓Conducting hands-on OSHA certification training, evaluation, and safety onboarding for all new and existing site operators.
  • ✓Auditing warehouse traffic patterns, managing fleet maintenance logs, and optimizing aisle layout efficiency.
  • ✓Overseeing multi-shift floor movement, resolving inventory bottlenecks, and handling complex, high-value, or oversized freight operations.
What they can't do yet — legally
  • ✕Cannot override manufacturer load-capacity specifications or bypass OSHA-mandated equipment safety lockouts.
What they need to hold
Master or supervisor card where the state issues oneContinuing education current
Worth doing
Bring them on to lead warehouse traffic safety, run OSHA-compliant operator training, and minimize site-wide inventory and rig damage.
Where recruiters stall
Candidates stall in your pipeline when they have decades of seat time but lack leadership skills, safety documentation expertise, or formal trainer certifications.
Only hire when
You land a certified train-the-trainer who can audit site traffic flows, onboard new hires, and maintain 100% OSHA fleet compliance across shifts.

Screen them properly

Certificates get a candidate past the first filter. These are the questions that separate the ones who can do the work from the ones who have the paperwork, and they change by level.

Interview questions that actually filter

01What did you do on your last site, task by task?
Why it matters: A specific answer tells you what they have actually held in their hands. A vague one usually means they watched.
02Who signed your hours, and can we call them?
Why it matters: Undocumented hours are the single most common problem at this level, and it is the employer who discovers it later.
03Which tools do you own?
Why it matters: It is a proxy for commitment to the trade, and it tells you what you will be supplying on day one.

Warehouse shifts, changing construction sites and supply-yard delivery peaks affect operator staffing. Industrial-truck employee medians guide wages, not separate telehandler rates; benefits, equipment and project expenses require additional budgeting.

Questions employers ask

What information must our training certification record contain?▾
OSHA specifies operator name, training and evaluation dates, and the identity of those performing training or evaluation.
Must every experienced hire repeat identical training?▾
Relevant prior training may avoid duplication where the operator is evaluated competent; address gaps and the actual truck and workplace.
When is a parked forklift legally unattended?▾
OSHA defines it as 25 feet or more away while in view, or outside the operator's view; apply the required securing measures.
